Review: The Umbrella Academy

To say I'm not a fan of My Chemical Romance, would be lying. They used to drive me crazy, now I think they are a fun, tongue-in-cheek journey into the darkest places of the bizarre and emo. So I have to say I was relieved to see MCR's Gerard Way as the writer. I mean, if any rocker was going to write a palatable comic maybe it would be the doofy lead singer of a pseudo-Goth-rock version of Queen.
And man does it deliver. It's mad cap, well-formed, violent, dark and funny as hell. Not to act like a fan boy, because I am not that big a fan of Way or Romance. But I am a fan of comics. And this is one of the best I've read.
Of course, there are times when it is a little confusing or choppy, probably well-conceived in Way's brain, but not so well on the page. However, with the help of his bizarro setting and wit, oh and Gabriel Ba's great artwork, he manages to pull out of rough spots with aplomb.
Seriously. I can't wait for more.
